Mission Statement
The Mission of the Canyon Municipal Court is to efficiently process and administer all matters coming into and before the Court. The Court shall provide equal and impartial justice under the law, and will provide an accessible legal forum which provides uniformity, fairness and justice to all people having cases with the Court. The Court will:
- Ensure fair an impartial justice to all defendants.
- Process each case efficiently without delay.
- Conduct hearings regarding the defendants' ability to fulfill court orders.
- Provide programs for juveniles and adults to comply with court orders.
- Comply withy all State laws.
- Conduct and participate in educational training to fulfill the Court's goal of fairness and procedural justice.
Overview
The Canyon Municipal Court is the first level of the judicial branch of government. The jurisdiction of the Municipal Court includes Class C misdemeanors occurring within the territorial limits of the City of Canyon. The department collects fines and court fees from citations issued within the City by the Police Department, Animal Control Division, Fire Marshal, Environmental Health or the Code Enforcement Officer. Trial and pre-trial hearings and initial appearances are scheduled by the Municipal Court. The Municipal Court manages administrative work such as deferrals, driver's safety programs, payment plans, extensions, warrants, and State reporting.
Purpose
Municipal courts have exclusive original jurisdiction in the enforcement of city ordinances. Municipal Court along with Justice of the Peace courts have concurrent jurisdiction over Penal Code class C violations. Municipal Courts can fine a specific amount for traffic and other Class C Misdemeanors. Fine ranges can be $1.00 to $500.00.
Citations or Notice on Health Complaints
You must appear by the date written on your citation, bonds, summons, or release papers. You or your attorney may appear in person in open court or by regular mail, email or virtual court. A PHONE CALL DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN APPEARANCE. Failure to appear by the date noted may result in a warrant being issued for your arrest. Please make sure you respond by the date on your citation.
