Citizen Police Academy

The Citizen's Police Academy provides citizens with a better understanding of the Canyon Police Department.

The academy consists of eight (8) weeks of instruction meeting Thursday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 pm in the Adobe Room at the Cole Community Center, 301 16th Street.  Attending the academy will not certify you to work as a police officer, but it will give you insight into police work and you'll have fun along the way.

Each week a different area of the criminal justice system is covered. Instructors represent a cross section of the department and other law enforcement professionals each of who are well qualified in their field.

Who May Attend the Citizen's Police Academy

Any interested citizen who resides or works in the City of Canyon is encouraged to attend.  Citizens involved with the community in some way, such as youth involvement, neighborhood watch, and neighborhood groups are very important to the academy. You must be at least 18 years of age.  If you are interested in applying for admission to the Canyon Police Department Citizen's Police Academy, please fill out an application and fax it to (806) 655-5007, email it to,  or mail it to:

Canyon Police Department

Canyon, TX 79015

An Application can also be mailed to you by calling 806-655-5005, or picked up at Canyon Police Department.

Due to the sensitive nature of some of the topics, applicants will be subject to a limited background check to determine their suitability. The check will be limited to criminal history and warrant information and will not be used for any other purposes nor shared with any other persons or entities.  Those selected for the next academy will be contacted by phone and in writing. Prospective students must commit to and attend a majority of the classes.
